october 31st of 1966. premature cries ring through atlanta, georgia. a mother’s shaky hands hold her newborn daughter, father’s face blanched from nervousness. the baby continues to cry. the mother looks down at the baby. she says, with a soft voice:“i’ll name her 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒓 𝒋𝒖𝒏𝒆 𝒑𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍.”& that was the start of this story. parker had a rough beginning in life, being born prematurely. underweight, significantly so; no fault of anybody’s. doctors told her parents, calvin & margaret powell, that they did not expect for little parker to live long. the two new parents watched as parker live the first month or so of her life in the nicu; barely pulling through enough to finally go home with them.they were a simple family; calvin worked as a deputy in atlanta, mae was a housewife. parker could only be described as a child with a quirky nature. they were obsessed with big words, the literature of the time; though, she’d obsess over certain topics for months at a time, absorb herself into media. she was prone to meltdowns, sensitive to certain textures; unbeknownst to them, parker was simply an autistic child in the 1970’s. margaret & calvin went on to have two more children; peter, their middle child, & penny, the youngest.for a long while, things were normal in their little town. parker was a normal seven year old in atlanta. till, parker’s world was unfortunately turned upside down.the accident. december 31st, 1975. new years eve, at 8 pm; parker & margaret were on a walk, out to go buy some tea. a car lost control on the road & swerved, & mae, in an attempt to save her daughter, threw parker out of the way. she succeeded in her attempt to save parker, at the cost of her own life —— the car crushed margaret against a pole, parker watching in absolute horror. the image of their mother was burned into their memory, for years to come. margaret survived the accident, but it was no way to live after that.calvin did everything he could to help parker. intensive therapy, especially. through that, parker was diagnosed with severe depression due to witnessing their mother’s accident. however, the young powell also was given another diagnosis —— childhood schizophrenia. this was what autism was often referred to as in the early to mid seventies. parker would not receive a proper diagnosis until 1980, when autism was classified separately from schizophrenia. this was believed to be the result of maeve having lost her warmth for her oldest daughter, who had taken on a primary caretaker role for their other two siblings.eventually, parker’s psychiatrist suggested to calvin they move far far alway, to separate parker from the town where the accident happened. calvin agreed, & within the months, parker & calvin settled into hawkins, indiana. calvin secured a job thanks to an old acquaintance, jim hopper —— an officer, just like his previous job.hawkins was the place parker made a home. however, that didn’t stop parker from struggling severely, finding themself unable to quite fit in with other kids. parker also was still struggling with the trauma of watching their mother be hit, which had only happened just a few months prior. margaret needed a lot of care, having been severely injured beyond repair in the accident. & parker always helped her. they’d do anything for their mother, despite their mother’s clear loss of affection. she was bitter, & an angry woman. though she wasn’t abusive, she had become cold. the years progressed, parker never quite digging themself out of the rut that was their mind. they struggled with simple tasks, even basic hygiene.calvin, however, never stopped trying to help his child. he took care of parker, tried to get her out as much as possible. because of him, parker picked up the bass guitar, & fell in love with it. calvin thought this would help parker progress, & he was at least somewhat right. eventually, he resorted to religion, praying to some god above to help parker. he took parker to church consistently, causing parker to build a complicated relationship with christianity. if god was so wonderful, like her father said, why were parker’s prayers never answered? calvin insisted despite their flaws, they were created in the lord’s image. because of this, parker has a certain view on religion as they get older.freshman year of high school was where everything fell apart for parker. they were still plagued with the accident of their mother, night terrors often overtaking them. it was because of this, parker first asked a one eddie munson for some drugs. eddie, unaware how it would snowball, began to become parker’s main dealer. at first, it was just marijuana —— however, soon, that wasn’t enough for parker.the drugs got harder. pills, coke —— anything, really, to make parker be able to cope with the reality of their life. parker was addicted, & it was completely destroying their relationship with their father. he was dealing with their violence, their outbursts —— on more than one occasion, having to arrest his own child. it was only because of hopper’s kindness & calvin’s pleading that instead of prison, parker saw rehab instead. however, around late season two, their mother finally died due to suicide —— deciding she would rather die than live like this. a lack of a will to live. after this point, this was truly where parker had to take on a motherly role & help calvin support all three children.over the course of highschool, parker became attached to eddie & his friend group. eddie, to make amends for the life parker began to participate in, took notice to parker’s ability to play bass. that being said, he offered parker a spot in corroded coffin —— a spot that parker hesitantly accepted. they weren’t very high on the popularity foodchain anyways, being so studious & whatnot. so, parker became the bassist for corroded coffin. the members of corroded coffin quickly became like family —— people who loved parker, for parker. parker also used their musical ability to be in the marching band, becoming loose friends with robin buckley —— their first same-sex crush, that they’d never admit to. to this day, parker & robin are extremely close friends.with all this in mind, parker “pj” powell is an enigmatic individual. a witty, sharp tongued individual who sees relatively in black & white. they’re cunning in some aspects, but also, a massive dork in others. however, parker has a tendency to mask how they really feel, liking to be a mystery to others.
